What Are Bed Bugs

I'm sure everybody has become aware of bed bugs but you might not know what they look like, just how your house or business can be infected and more importantly, just how to remove them!

Well, let's start with what they are and how they can be identified. The scientific name is 'Cimex lectularius' for these pesky bugs. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Agriculture (USDA) view these bloodthirsty bugs as a public health pest. They are a public health pest, these aggravating creatures are not known to transmit disease, but some individuals have had an allergic reaction.

This doesn't mean you should simply ignore bed bugs or otherwise take the problem seriously. They can cause other public health problems so it is vitally important to prevent and control these insects.

Over the last few years, there has been a larger problem with bed bugs in the USA. Experts attribute increased traveling, lack of public education, bed bugs being resistant to pesticides and insufficient control methods to the increased problem.

Identifying A Bed Bug Problem

The first step is knowing what to look for - Other bugs can be mistaken for bed bugs. So to prevent a long and expensive treatment for the wrong bug let's first learn how to identify them.

Bed bug eggs are roughly the dimension of a pinhead, have a white pearl color and a dark eye spot on them if they are more than 5 days old. Nymphs or young bed bugs are little, transparent and yellowish white in color. It can be practically impossible to see them without a magnifying glass if they have not fed recently. Fully grown bed bugs are 3/16 to 1/4 inch long and brownish in color. They've got a flat oblong form if they have not fed recently. If they've fed recently, they're going to be red brown in color and they're going to be balloon-like and much longer. Looking more closely, you'll be able to see a beak, 3-segments, an antenna, wings that are not used for flying, and short hairs that are golden in color.

You'll also detect a smelly, musty odor that is sometimes considered to be a musty sweet odor that is created from the glands underneath the bug.
